Dalgado Konknni Akademi’s Annual Awards Announced

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) has announced its annual awards to personalities who have contributed to the development of Konkani in Roman script. Eminent Konknni stalwart and scholar and former acting Vice-Chancellor of the Goa University, late Prof. (Dr.) Olivinho Gomes will be honoured posthumously with Dalgado Puroskar 2009 for his life time contribution to Konkani literature in Roman script.
Shri Minguel Jacob Carmo Luis Fernandes, who is popularly known 'Prince Jacob' – the prince of the Konknni tiatr, who staged his first tiatr, Pinzrem in 1985 and then went on to produce a quarter century of acclaimed khell-tiatrs will be conferred with Dalgado Puroskar 2009 for culture.
Both these awards carry a shawl, a memento, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- each.
Antonio da Piedade Morais, who tirelessly work for the preservation of Goa’s literature, culture and identity, will be honoured with ‘Dalgado Daiz Puroskar 2009.’
Dalgado Puroskar 2009 for institutions furthering the cause of Konknni in Roman script will be awarded to Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr (TSKK), a Konknni research, educational and cultural centre named after the sixteenth century English Jesuit, Fr. Thomas Stephens.
Both these awards carry a shawl, a memento, a citation and a cash prize of
Rs. 20,000/- each.
Dalgado Konknni Akademi’s Fr. Freddy J. da Costa Puroskar 2010 for journalism in Konknni in Roman script will be presented to Isidore Dantas, a Goan settled in Pune.
Dalgado Puroskar 2009 for youth contribution to Konkani in Roman script will be conferred on Miss Nevena Furtado who writes poems and short stories with depth.
Both these awards carry a shawl, a memento, a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- each.
Shri. Premanand Lotlikar, President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi has congratulated all the awardees and hoped that their example of love and sacrifices towards the development of Konkani in Roman script will inspire the youth of today to work with dedication for the progress of our mother tongue, Konkani.
The Awards will be presented in a special function to be held on 8th April 2010, at 5.00 p.m. in Tiatr Academy Goa’s Conference Hall, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim. All the members of DKA and Konknni lovers are kindly requested to attend the award function in great numbers.
Some details about the Awardees
Late Dr. Olivinho Gomes
A prolific research oriented writer, Dr Gomes has authored more than 40 books in Konknni and English and presented papers and lectures at several international seminars. Having passed the 1969 Central Civil Services exam he was assigned to the Indian Revenue Service, where he held important positions in the Union Finance Ministry. He later became the Additional Customs Commissioner of six Divisions in the Aurangabad Commissionerate.
In 1987, he quit his high ranking post for the Konknni mission and joined the Goa University as Professor of Konknni and retired in 2003 as Head of Konkani Department. Recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation in 1993, Dr Olivinho Gomes also received various awards and research fellowships, such as the Jezvit Antonio Pereira Konkani Puroskar, V X Verodiano Foundation (USA) Award, Senior Commonwealth Fellowship and Dempo Trust Fellowship.
Known for his eye for detail, he wrote many books recording the history, literature and culture of Goa in his own inimitable style, notable among them being Village Goa, a detailed book on Chandor. His last DKA-commissioned book, Konkani Literature In Roman Script will be released soon.

Prince Jacob
A versatile writer and director with 48 tiatrs and khell-tiatrs to his credit so far, Prince Jacob has also translated the Marathi drama, Sahi Re Sahi and successfully staged it as Rupnnem in tiatr-form. Zayat Zage, his latest tiatr which uses humour to highlight the decay and impending death of everything dear to Goa and Goans, bagged the first prize at the First Popular Tiatr Festival organized by Tiatr Academy of Goa recently.
A two-time recipient of the Best Actor Award instituted by Gulab magazine and a celebrity Konknni RJ on BIG FM, Prince Jacob has scripted and staged three religious tiatrs as well, Gõycho Saib, Sant Anton Milagrincho Sagor and Padr Zuze Vaz – Gõycho Askari. His Padri khell-tiatr the last of 25 tiatrs under letter ‘P’ series, was performed 315 times in India and abroad and was later converted into a celluloid film of the same name.
Antonio Piedade Morais
He has established a modern research and reference library, Goenkaranchem Daiz (GD) in Margao and has himself donated a treasure of over 3000 books covering Konknni language, literature, culture, history and other subjects to his missionary endeavor.
A retired Goa Civil Service Officer, Antonio da Piedade Morais who has been actively involved in the promotion and development of Konknni language and has contributed countless articles on history and health, language, politics and religion to newspapers and magazines in Goa, Mumbai and Kerala. He took the initiative to open various branches of Konknni Bhasha Mandal in different parts of Goa and also established Konknni Obheas Kendr, a research centre in Panaji in 1969.
Shri Morais is a recipient of various awards and recognitions, notable among them being the Jezvit Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar in 2002, Konknni Bhasha Mandal’s Seva Puroskar in 2006 and Eduardo Bruno de Souza Iadostik Son’man conferred by Jivit magazine in 2007.

Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr
Established in September 1985 and presently based in Alto Porvorim, TSKK aims at fostering the unity of the Konknni people through the promotion of Konknni language, literature and culture.
TSKK has its own modern library with more than 15000 volumes on such diverse subjects as language, literature and linguistics, folklore and cultural anthropology, besides grammars and dictionaries of many Indian languages. The centre has so far published over 20 research and educational books in Konknni as well as CDs and cassettes of nursery rhymes, devotional songs and language learning material. TSKK also boasts of a mini botanical garden with its focus on local fruits and flower plants.

Every year, TSKK has been conducting seminars, workshops and writing courses to teach Konknni to students, teachers and researchers and has instituted several awards and scholarships to writers, artists and students. These include the Jezvit Antonio Pereira Konknni Puroskar, Carvalho Ghorannem –TSKK Kola Puroskar (in association with Mandd Sobhann, Mangalore), Konknni Martir Floriano Vaz Puroskar and Fr. Lederle Memorial Scholarships, Carvalho Family Scholarships and Lorenço & Umbelina de Souza Scholarship.


Isidore Dantas
He has been consistently contributing to various Konknni newspapers and magazines such as Sot, Divtti, Vavraddeancho Ixtt, The Goan Sports Weekly, Gulab, Jivit, Uzvadd, etc. A former secretary of Pune Goans Social Union, he was instrumental in establishing Konknni Bhasha Mandal in Pune and in the sixties, he published Ulo, a cyclostyled weekly in Konknni in an effort to sustain the love of mother tongue.
A gifted person, Isidore Dantas has written and successfully staged two tiatrs and has to his credit a collection of Konknni adages with English interpretations, Vozram published in 2007. His Konknni crossword, Utram-khell appears regularly every month in Jivit magazine.
Recipient of Al Jerry Braganza Yadostik Sonman in 2008 for his research-related work in the field of Konknni cinema, Isidore Dantas has provided the English subtitles for the Konknni film, Bhuimierantlo Monis.

Nevena Furtado
Nevena Furtado who has worked as a counsellor for orphaned children and is at present doing her B.Ed through Nirmala Institue, Panaji has been writing poetry and stories since her school days and has attended various poetry recitation competitions and workshops, besides appearing on Doordarshan and the Yuvavani programme of AIR. A regular contributor to Jivit magazine, her collection of short stories is due for release soon.
A member of a cultural troupe showcasing Goan folk dances, Nevena recently bagged the first prize at the All India Essay Writing Contest organized by Sahaj Marg Research & Training Institute (SMRTI), Goa.

"Only Konkani language in all script and not in a particular script,
can save Goan culture and Goan identity." - Tomazinho Cardozo.

Goa, Feb 22: 2nd Konkani (Roman Script) Literary and Cultural
Convention held at Kudchodem was held at Frank Fernands Nagar,
Ravindra Bhavan, Kudchodem, Goa on 20th and 21st February. The
programme was organised by the Dalgado Konkani Akademy of Goa.

A colourful venue was setup for the programme and the venue was named
after welknown Konkani film personality Late Frank Fernand and the
main stage was named after Late Albert S Carvalho.

The programme started with the procession lead by the traditional
music. Welcome committee president Fr. Manuel Gomes, Working President
of the organizing committee Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, main speaker Fr.
Bonaventure D'Pietro, MLA of Kudchodem Mr. Shyam Satardekar, MLA of
Kepem Mr. Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar, Dalgado Konkani Akademy President
Premanand A Lotlikar and the programme secretary Mr Walter Menezes
were present at the dais.

Former Goa Assembly speaker and the first president of newly formed
Tiatr Akademy of Goa Mr Tomazinho Cardozo explained the confusion of
language and scripts in Goa. "All Konkani people of Goa with whole
mind and soul worked for the cause of Konkani. They fought united
during the opinion poll and also to make Konkani a state language. But
unfortunately someone with a evil agenda inserted a phrase "Konkani in
Devnagiri" in a official language act of Goa. This phrase divided
Goans and thus started a controversy" he said. He explained the
importance of preserving Konkani written in all sects and all scripts,
there by making it to flourish it in all angles and directions. "Only
Konkani language in all script and not in a particular script, can
save Goan culture and Goan identity. " he affirmed. He also stressed
the need of uniting the broken society by uniting all scripts of
Konkani and giving equal importance to all."

Dalgado Konkani Akademy President Premnand A Lotlikar said that "We
extend our full support to Devnagiri script as we also give equal
importance to Roman script, Kannada script and other scripts of
Konkani. Thus our work strategy is very clear. But the intention of
the people who insist on 'One Language, One script and One society' to
destroy the Konkani of the people of other scripts, dialects and
sects. This is nothing but a fascist idea. These people need to accept
this fact for the healthy growth of the Konkani language even if it is
bitter to them to digest." he advised

"The light of Konkani language needs to be lead by the youngsters"
said Fr. Manuel Gomes in his welcome speech. "The taste of milk and
honey of Konkani language was first tasted in seventeen century
because of the hard work of European missionaries. They had brought
out several Konkani books in Roman script. But later on the Konkani
had a deep sleep. There were several reasons for this sleep and the
key one was the mad order given by Mr. Conde De Alvor prohibiting
people to speak, read and write Konkani. Konkani in Roman script has
the history of more than five hundred (500) years and this is the
major yardstick for Konkani language to get the state language
status." he informed.

Fr. Bonaventure D'Pietro said that "There is a vast history of the
contribution of Roman script in the development of Konkani language.
When I was in Mumbai in 1963 there were atleast 6 Konkani weeklies in
Roman script. Konkani people used to work selflessly even sacrifying
their basic needs of food and shelter. But when the grant came from
the Govt the Devnagiri lobby was shrewd enough to corner it only to
their people. They did not want the real workers to get the funds.
They pre-decided the awardees and then published their books and
managed to gather all the funds only for themselves. But Fr Freddy
D'Costa and others stood like a pillar to fight against this
injustice. Unfortunately he met with an accident. This was a major
setback. But once again Tomazinho and others have come together to
fight this injustice." he said.

MLA of Kepem Mr Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar praised the organisers for
galvanising a large crowd for the cause of Roman script Konkani.
Preserving Goan identity is the need of the hour he said. The
secretary of the organising committee Mr. Walter Menezes gave vote of
thanks.

Two sessions were held on 21st. The theme of the morning session was
"Youngsters and their future" which was moderated by Fr. Kyriel
D'Souza. Mr. Vincy Quadros, Mr. Titus Noronha and Mr. Pandarinat D
Lotlikar presented their papers.

The theme of the evening session was "Development of Konkani
literature through the Roman script. The session was moderated by Dr.
Rafael Fernandes. Fr. Louis Alvares, Mr. Anil Kumar and Fr. Pratap
Naik presented their papers.

Three resolutions were passed during the convention. 1. Demanding the
Govt to give equal status to Roman script Konkani in the language act.
2. The stopped Kala Akademy awards for Roman script Konkani to be
revoked. 3. To urge Govt to build a full fledged auditorium in Panaji
for the Tiatr and other Konkani activities.

Kudchodem-Kakoda Muncipal Corporation President Mr Paresh Bhende was
the chief guest of the concluding ceremony. In his speach he said that
while coming to the venue he was instructed by someone not to praise
the cause of Roman script of Konkani. But he said that he extends his
wholehearted support for this cause taken by Dalgado Konkani Akademy.
He himself believe that one particular script or dialect can not
preserve the identity of Goan culture. Sahity Akademy Award winner Mr.
Jess Fernandes, organising committee working president Tomazinho
Cardozo, Dalgado Konkani Akademy President Mr Premanand A Lotlikar
also spoke during this occasion. Organising committe tresurer Mr.
Thomas C Fernandes welcomed the gathering, Dalgado Konkani Akademy
secretary Mr Jose Salvadore Fernandes gave Vote of thanks.

"Zayat Zage" Tiatr by Prince Jacob and other cultural items were also
presented during this occasion.

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA), a premier institution for promoting Konkani in Roman script is pleased to announce various financial schemes conceived to assist writers and researchers to publish their literary works in Konkani in Roman script for the financial year 2009-2010. Various financial schemes declared are as under:

Publication of Books

a) ‘Kombri’ Book Scheme:
Under this scheme, a writer’s first book will be published for which DKA will bear 100% cost of the book.

b) ‘Pikavoll’ Book Scheme:
Under this scheme, the writer will be given 80% of the cost of the printing of the book by DKA. The remaining 20% will be borne by the writer.

Under the above mentioned two schemes publication of books of Short Stories, Poems, Dramas, Essays, etc. will be considered for publication by DKA as per the scheme.


c) Publication of Research Works:
Any book of research related to Konkani literature, culture, social aspects, etc. will be published by DKA in Konkani or in English.

d) ‘Adlem Girest Sahit’ya’ Scheme
Under this scheme publication of old Konkani literature will be taken up. Books published in olden times by renowned writers which are not available in the present times shall be reprinted under this scheme by DKA.

e) Publications of Folklore
Publication of books on Goan folk art, folk theatre, folksongs and matter related to Goan folk culture in book form shall be published in Konkani or English or in both the languages under this scheme.

f) Publication of Biographies/Monographs
Biographies/Monographs of renowned writers of Konkani in Roman script shall be published in Konkani/English under this scheme.

Travel Grant to writers
In order to understand the modern trends in literature in other languages and in order to give opportunity to writers in Konkani in Roman script to acquire thorough knowledge and understanding of their literary subject, DKA under its ‘Travel Grant to Writers Scheme’ will select five deserving writers of different literary forms in Konkani Roman script this year. The selected writers will visit the neighbouring states and study the literary form of their choice in that language.

Miscellaneous Activities
Numerous activities for the promotion of Konkani in Roman script are organized by different Associations/Organizations throughout Goa will be given financial support by the DKA as per the nature of the programme.

DKA appeals to all the budding as well as established writers and researchers to avail the benefits of the various schemes declared.
